Abstract
In the Late Pleistocene Taguro peaty bed of the western margin of Kanto Plain, fossil of pollen, macroplants and insects occur in relative abundance. Fossil pollen assemblage was divided into two zones based on pollen analysis. From the lower one to zone TG-A , recognized were the coniferous to deciduous forests of the Cool Temperate Zone containing many of Picea, Cryptomeria, Fagus, Acer; and the climatic condition was slightly cooler than the present. In the Zone TG-B, recognized were the coniferous forests of the Cool Temperate Zone containing many of Picea with Larix; and the climatic condition was cooler than the lower zone. Cryptomeria was decrease in this zone.
The age of this Pollen zone has been considered to be about the age of 38,000 years ago. The Pollen
assemblage of the Taguro peaty bed is correlative to the δ18 Stage 3 or 5.
The insect assemblage of the bed includes aquatic beetles mainly, such as Elaphrus japonicus, Agabus conspicuus, Donacia hiurai, Plateumaris sericea, and P. constricticollis. This assemblage indicates the paleoenvironment of the bed that there were mainly marsh of reeds and sedges accompanied with areas of still water.
