Abstract The lichen genera Pannaria and Parmeliella are known to be members of the Pannariaceae with the genus Erioderma FÉE. They are characterized by the squamulose or foliose thallus, paraplectenchymatous upper cortex, and heteromerous medulla containing Nostoc. These two genera are generally separated by the presence or absence of apothecial margine : Pannaria has apothecia of lecanorine type and Pameliella those of the biatorine type.
YOSHIMURA (1974) reported 9 species of Pannaria and 5 species and one forma of Parmeliellla from Japan. In 1978, JØRGENSEN added two species of Pannaria, P. ahlneri, P. M. JØRG. and P. praetermissa NYL., to the Japanese flora. For the Chichibu Mountains, however, the occurrence of only three species has been confirmed. They are Pannaria rubiginosa (THUNB.) DEL. var. lanuginosa ZAELBR.(=P. conoplea (ACH.) BORY), Parmeliella leptophylla VAIN. (= P. gricea (HUE) KUROK.) (KUROKAWA, 1953) and Pannaria leucosticta (TUCK.) NYL.(KASHIWADANI, 1981). In this paper, 6 species are newly reported from the present area : Pannaria ahlneri, P. rubiginosa, P. lurida, P. leucophaea, Parmeliella incisa, P. nigrocincta f. isidiosa.
